IMO a pet build is viable, I've been using one with:

Strength: 10+1
Swordmanship: 12+1+1
Beast Mastery: 8

NRA
Battle Rage
Sever Artery
Gash
Sun and Moon Slash
Whirlwind Attack
Save Yourselves
Comfort Animal

If you add Strength of Honour to one of your heroes with 12 in smiting prayers and maintain it on you and your pet thats +21 damage each per hit that coupled with NRA and whirlwind attack makes for some nice damage output. Maybe not as good as a W/D for damage but I prefer it.

EDIT: Generally energy isn't a problem even when using a sundering sword mod as NRA is the only skill using energy the 20 sec recharge is plenty of time to get 15 energy back, obviously if you have problems use a zealous sword.

I was mostly curious how high his BM should be?
14 Sword, 8+1 Strength, 10 BM for DS/SY!?
How about for a WA build?
Still Sword higher or Strength for Power Attack and longer WA?

It seems he enjoys WA, so by the looks of it, he'll stick with it a bit longer. Since we have a bunch of NM content before us, this shouldn't pose a threat, but I am still curious so that I know how to advise him after he moves on.

Enough Str to get 24/7 WE, Max Sword, rest to BM is reasonable as long as he does not use BM skills.

You can also convince him to try 100b.

IMO you do not need to get WE 24/7. 29/30 at str 12 still rocks. You may put the rest of the points into BM.

Ummmm Wrong.

If you find it fun having a pet that is reason enough to use one.

Now if we we're talking about a reason to use a pet in terms of the effectiveness then I'd probably agree with fenix and say no pets aren't that great in terms of what they bring to a warriors bar, but hey if all people did was run DS/SY on their warrior bars and wouldn't except anything but a DS/SY warrior into a group I'd probably just delete my warrior.

Never Rampage Alone is the best reason to give pets a try IMO. The synergy is pretty obvious there.

The problem with NRA, of course, is the 15e cost. As such, Warrior's Endurance is really the only option if you want to utilize any pet attack skills (which are quite energy intensive). And the problem with WE, of course, is that it's in the strength line, so now you're trying to spec highly into 3 attribute lines.

Another option is to add a pet to your standard DS/SY! build, replacing Flail with NRA and dropping 1 other skill for Comfort Animal (probably an energy skill like EH or EC). In this case, you would take no pet attack skills, and your pet would just be there to do 25% IAS auto attacks and soak up damage.

Hammer build is another option, set up similarly to the above-mentioned DS build.

To me, the best way to make a REAL warrior/pet hybrid build (not just a warrior build with a pet tacked on) is WE, which would allow you to utilize both warrior attack skills like Power Attack and Whirlwind Attack and pet attack skills like Predator's Pounce and maybe Melandru's Assault (awesome skill, but 10e).

Using WE with lots of skills that cost energy also helps mitigate one of the other problems with using pets on a Warrior - the loss of all adrenaline if the pet dies.

I've actually tried an IWAY PvE team, with heros obviously, just to see how it would work out. It was a very silly experience and there was this intense feeling of stupidity and languor quite unlike the PvP version. Something was obviously missing.

I think it was that when the enemies die, they just fall over instead of raging and calling you names.

What is the huge advantage of iway I'm not seeing? All I see is IAS and health regen comparable to a W/Mo.

For PvP, you get permanent decent health regen and a non-stance IAS on a warrior for a low energy investment. This is pretty good (or pretty annoying, depending on which team you are on).

For PvE, it sucks donkey balls since you have to send in pets, let them die, rush in, kill, rez pets, repeat. In that case it's better to use NRA, which however relies on keeping the pets alive.

Exactly this.

Seriously you don't see how 40/45 seconds of IAS + health regen that stack with anything, are in one skill slot, and unremovable for only 5 energy could be desirable?
